Monel alloy 400 (UNS N04400) is a solid-solution nickel-copper alloy, not steel. It is frequently specified for marine fittings, valves, process components, and pump or propeller shafting. Monel is a family of alloys, so an order should identify the precise alloy and specification rather than use only the trade name.

Applications and Grade Selection
Monel 400 is a nickel-copper solid-solution alloy. Precipitation-hardenable Monel K-500 is a distinct grade with different properties. Monel 400 also should not be confused with chromium-bearing Inconel alloys. Selection must account for fluid chemistry, operating conditions, design stresses, and the specified material standard.

Common Questions
Is Monel a kind of stainless steel?
No. Monel is a nickel-copper alloy family, whereas stainless steels are iron-based chromium alloys.
Is Monel 400 equivalent to Monel K-500?
No. K-500 is precipitation-hardenable and must be ordered as its own designated alloy.
