Bearing Shaft Quality (BSQ) round bar is ordered for shafts, bearing seats, rollers and other rotating components where the bar’s diameter, straightness and surface condition matter to downstream machining or assembly. Mozaic Precision Metals can supply BSQ-oriented bar stock and process customer-supplied material through precision centerless grinding, straightening, polishing and cut-to-length operations.
BSQ is an application or purchasing description, not one universal metal alloy, diameter tolerance or bearing-fit standard. The drawing, material specification, shaft design and mating bearing determine the actual acceptance criteria. We prepare stock for bearing-shaft applications; requirements for complete machined shafts, bearings, journals and finished bearing assemblies must be quoted separately.
How to Specify Bearing Shaft Quality Bar
| Specification | What your drawing or RFQ should state |
|---|---|
| Material grade | SAE, UNS, ASTM or AMS grade; relevant supply and heat-treatment condition |
| Bar diameter | Starting and finished OD, acceptable upper/lower limits and inspection locations |
| Straightness and runout | Allowable bow or TIR, test span and support/rotation method |
| Roundness | Separate tolerance or measurement method where bearing fit requires it |
| Surface finish | Specified Ra or RMS limit for journal or follow-on machining conditions |
| Length and ends | Full bars or cuts; cut-length tolerance, end chamfer or machining allowance |
| Traceability | Mill test report, heat/lot, hardness or heat-treatment records when required |
Ground bar stock may still require turning, hardening, finishing or other operations to make a finished bearing journal. Bearing fit classes must come from the specific bearing design; they should not be guessed from the term BSQ.
Materials for Bearing-Shaft Applications
Depending on shaft design, we can review carbon and alloy steels, stainless grades and wear-oriented materials. Examples for discussion include 1045 carbon steel for many mechanical shafts, 4140 alloy steel for selected higher-strength applications, and 52100 bearing steel when the specified bearing component requires that alloy. These grades are not automatic substitutes and actual availability is quoted by grade, diameter and condition.
Stainless steel shaft material may be appropriate for some environments, but the grade and corrosion exposure must be specified. If the job focuses on fluid-handling shafting rather than bearing fit, see our separate Pump Shaft Quality stainless steel bar page.
Precision Centerless Ground BSQ Bars vs. Finished Shafts
A precision ground BSQ bar is incoming round stock prepared for machining or assembly to the buyer’s specification. It is not inherently a completed, bearing-mounted shaft. Centerless grinding controls the outer diameter of the bar; straightening and polishing can be quoted as separate steps where required.
For broad stock sourcing, see Precision Ground Bars. For outside-diameter reduction on bars you already own, see our Centerless Grinding job-shop service. This page focuses specifically on purchasing and preparing bar for bearing-shaft applications.
BSQ Stock for CNC Machining, Rollers and Industrial Equipment
Buyers ask about BSQ bars for transmission shafts, industrial equipment shafts, rollers, rotating machinery and precision-machined journal features. The design may call for dimensional uniformity at the bearing seat, straightness along long bars, controlled roughness and protected shipment to prevent surface damage.
We can coordinate straightening, cut-to-length and protective bar packaging with your material-supply or processing request. Mozaic is ISO 9001:2015 certified and reviews inspection and certificate requirements by customer order.
Common BSQ Questions
Does BSQ always mean a fixed diameter tolerance?
No. Specify the finished limits and the drawing or customer standard. Material size, treatment and length affect what can be achieved.
Can Mozaic work with our existing shaft stock?
Yes, qualifying customer-supplied bars can be evaluated for grinding, straightening, polishing or cutting as an alternative to sourcing new ground stock.
Is BSQ identical to turned, ground and polished (TG&P) bar?
No. BSQ describes a shafting purchase requirement, while TG&P identifies a manufacturing/finishing route. A specified bar may satisfy both, but acceptance must come from the order requirements.

BSQ Purchasing Checklist: Avoid a Bar-to-Bearing Fit Mismatch
High-performing bearing-shaft assemblies start with a clear acceptance plan. A shaft stock quote should distinguish nominal bar size from the actual journal size that will contact a bearing after subsequent machining or heat treatment. A ground bar tolerance alone does not determine an ISO bearing fit, bearing preload, or finished shaft performance.
- Bearing design: identify the bearing type, mating fit and finished journal requirements supplied by your engineer.
- Material and hardness: give the exact grade, condition and required treatment; do not substitute 52100 for 4140 or 1045 without engineering approval.
- Geometry: specify long-bar straightness and local bearing-seat roundness independently, with inspection methods.
- Process scope: note whether you are purchasing ground round stock or a fully machined shaft with shoulders, threads and finished bearing journals.
Why BSQ Terminology Matters
“BSQ” may be used differently among industrial shafting buyers. Confirm whether your purchase order means bearing shaft quality and provide the standard or drawing. This page addresses precision bar preparation for bearing applications; it does not promise boat-propeller shaft material suitability under an unrelated BSQ purchasing specification.
Mozaic can source qualifying bar or grind customer-supplied stock, with straightening, cutting and protected packaging coordinated around your inspection plan.
