Pump Shaft Quality (PSQ) stainless steel round bar is prepared for pump shafting and related rotating components where material selection, straightness, outside-diameter consistency and surface condition affect later machining or assembly. Mozaic Precision Metals can supply PSQ-oriented stainless bar stock and process customer-supplied bars by grinding, straightening, polishing, cutting and chamfering, subject to the actual drawing and material condition.
PSQ describes an application-specific bar quality requirement—not a single stainless grade or a universal guaranteed tolerance. Proper shaft design considers the pumped fluid, bearings, seals, deflection, corrosion exposure and the customer’s inspection standard. A bar ordered for PSQ service is not automatically a complete pump shaft.
Stainless Steel Grades for Pump Shaft Stock
| Grade | Why buyers may consider it | Important qualifications |
|---|---|---|
| 316 / 316L stainless steel | Molybdenum-alloyed austenitic grades for many industrial fluid environments | 316 and 316L are distinct orders; chloride pitting remains possible |
| 304 stainless steel | General industrial shafts in suitable environments | Corrosion suitability must be checked against the pumped fluid |
| 17-4 PH stainless steel | Specified higher-strength shaft components after approved heat treatment | Condition A/H900/H1025/H1150 and properties are not interchangeable |
| Monel 400 or other specialty alloys | Special corrosive services as specified by engineering | Actual chemistry, temperature, strength and media control material selection |
These are material-selection examples, not universal pump shaft recommendations. We quote availability against the exact grade, standard, condition and bar dimensions required.
PSQ Bar Straightness, OD Tolerance and Surface Finish
For a high-quality pump shaft, the finished outside diameter and straightness along the bar should be specified and inspected independently. The pump designer may also require roundness, journal roughness or a controlled hardness state for seals and bearings. A polished or centerless ground surface does not, by itself, establish a seal-compatible finished component.
- OD: starting dimension, finished diameter, tolerance band and measurement locations.
- Straightness: allowed TIR or bow, test length, support span and measurement method.
- Surface roughness: Ra or RMS value and the areas where it applies.
- Material condition: solution-annealed, cold-finished, aged or another specified state.
- Length and ends: finished cut length, chamfer/end preparation and machining allowance.
- Documentation: heat/lot traceability, material test certificates, hardness and inspection records when ordered.
Mozaic evaluates grinding and straightening requirements for each material, size and condition. We do not promise the same straightness, corrosion performance or dimensional limits for all PSQ orders.
Supply Finished Bar or Process Customer-Supplied Material
If you need pump shaft quality bar stock, Mozaic can review material sourcing and processing together. When your material is already on hand, we can quote centerless OD grinding, two-roll or press straightening, polishing and cut-to-length services as applicable.
For general round-stock purchasing across alloys, use our Precision Ground Bars page. For shafting across applications (not specifically pumps), see the Precision Shafting overview. This page is intended for PSQ stainless bar inquiries and pump-specific acceptance criteria.
Pump Shaft Bar Uses
PSQ bar may be ordered for pumps used in industrial fluid transfer, water treatment, machinery, wastewater applications and other services. Actual use must be qualified to the fluid chemistry, stress, operating temperature, sealing arrangement and required design code.
Mozaic Precision Metals is ISO 9001:2015 certified and can review customer-specified inspection and protective packaging needs. We supply or process bar material according to the purchase order; final pump shaft design and performance are determined by the equipment manufacturer.
Frequently Asked PSQ Questions
Is all 316 stainless bar Pump Shaft Quality?
No. 316 identifies the alloy. PSQ requires the dimensions, straightness, finish and additional acceptance criteria defined by the customer.
Does TG&P automatically mean PSQ?
No. Turned, ground and polished bar describes processing. It may be used for pump shafts if the separate PSQ requirements are satisfied.
Can we send our existing bar stock for processing?
Yes. Provide its material condition, initial OD, length and targeted result so Mozaic can determine whether the work can be quoted.
Request Pump Shaft Quality Stainless Steel Bar
Send grade/UNS, material condition, original and finished diameter, tolerance, straightness, surface finish, lengths, quantity and required certifications. Request PSQ bar pricing, email sales@mozaicprecision.com, or call 847-637-8379.
Compare PSQ Grades by the Actual Pump Service
Other pump-shaft suppliers stock multiple stainless and nickel grades because PSQ is not a single composition. Depending on engineering requirements, buyers may also ask about 410 stainless, 416 stainless or other shafting alloys. Corrosion resistance, mechanical condition and machining behavior differ by grade; Mozaic reviews availability rather than representing any grade as a universal drop-in replacement.
What a Pump-Shaft Bar Inspection Can and Cannot Establish
Inspection of ground bar OD, straightness and surface roughness helps verify incoming stock, but it does not establish rotor balance, corrosion life, seal suitability, assembled runout or pump reliability. Provide the seal/bearing design and engineering limits if these characteristics affect the processing plan.
Example PSQ Request for Quotation
State “316 stainless steel PSQ bar, certified grade and condition, 1.000-inch nominal finished OD, specified upper/lower dimensional limits, 12-foot random or cut lengths, quantity, allowable TIR and support span, and required surface roughness.” This is an RFQ example only; the quote will confirm achievable dimensions, stock availability, finishing steps and documentation.
We can coordinate supply plus centerless grinding, two-roll straightening, polishing, cutting and protective packaging, or process customer-supplied material when the starting stock is suitable.
