316 stainless steel round bar (UNS S31600) is an austenitic chromium-nickel grade alloyed with molybdenum to improve resistance to certain pitting and crevice corrosion exposures compared with 304. It is used for machined fluid-system components, shafts, fittings, and industrial equipment. Material selection still depends on environmental exposure, specification and condition.

Applications and Grade Comparison
The molybdenum addition improves resistance to some chloride-related localized corrosion compared with 304 stainless bar, but neither alloy is immune to corrosion. Medical purchasers should not treat ordinary 316 as automatically equivalent to 316LVM, which is ordered to distinct processing and certification requirements.
Precision Centerless Grinding and Bar Preparation
Mozaic can review centerless grinding, long-bar straightening, polishing, chamfering, and cutting for 316 stainless bar. Specify the precise grade and product standard, condition, OD, tolerance, length, finish, quantity and traceability documents. See Mozaic’s centerless grinding services.
Common Questions
What does molybdenum add to 316 stainless steel?
It improves resistance to certain forms of localized corrosion, including pitting and crevice corrosion, relative to 304 in many applications.
Can standard 316 replace medical-grade 316LVM?
Not automatically. Product specification, melting route, cleanliness and certification requirements must be checked.
