416 stainless steel round bar is a sulfur-modified martensitic stainless grade selected for machinability and the option to harden and temper. UNS S41600 is suitable for precision-turned shafts, valve parts, gears, and other machined components when its modest corrosion resistance is sufficient. It should not be presented as a default choice for seawater, chloride-rich, or strongly corrosive service.

Applications and Grade Selection
The sulfur addition improves chip breaking during machining, but compromises corrosion resistance, welding, and forming compared with 410 stainless steel. Unlike 416, 303 stainless steel is an austenitic free-machining grade and is not hardened by conventional heat treatment. Select the grade based on mechanical properties, exposure, and the applicable drawing.

Common Questions
Is 416 stainless steel suitable for seawater?
Generally not a preferred choice. Sulfur-enhanced machinability trades away corrosion resistance, so engineers should evaluate the actual environment and alternatives.
Can 416 be supplied hardened?
It can be hardened and tempered, but the ordered condition, hardness and applicable specification must be defined and verified.
