Centerless Grinding

Precision centerless grinding in Schaumburg, Illinois. Mozaic Precision Metals provides thru-feed, in-feed and long-bar centerless grinding for customer-supplied round bars and cylindrical components. Our job-shop service controls outside diameter and surface condition to the drawing or purchase-order requirements. We also source material when customers need a combined bar supply and grinding quote.

Thru-Feed, In-Feed and Long-Bar Centerless Grinding

Select the grinding method based on part geometry and finish requirements
Grinding method Typical application What to include in your RFQ
Thru-feed centerless grinding Bars and parts with a continuous grindable outside diameter that can pass between the wheels Bar diameter, length, grind length, total stock removal, target finish and volume
In-feed (plunge) grinding Suitable parts with shoulders or profiles that do not allow continuous thru-feed travel Drawing, shoulder positions, features, tolerances and part configuration
Long-bar grinding Precision-diameter preparation of extended round bars, supported during processing Starting and finished OD, full bar length, straightness/handling constraints and packaging

Centerless OD grinding uses a grinding wheel, regulating wheel and work support blade. The grinding wheel removes material from the outside of the workpiece; regulating-wheel settings control rotation and feed. This is distinct from center-type cylindrical grinding and internal-diameter grinding.

Materials and Size Requirements

We process stainless steel, carbon and alloy steel, tool steels, selected nickel alloys and other materials when the condition and grinding setup are suitable. Common inquiries include 303 stainless, 316 stainless, 17-4 PH, and 4140 alloy steel.

Our broader bar-processing range includes diameters of approximately 0.060 to 8.000 inches and long-bar handling in the 3- to 24-foot range. Those figures describe the overall service scope, not a promise that every diameter, length, alloy or grinding method can be combined. In particular, in-feed capacity, thru-feed wheel limits and bar support requirements are evaluated separately for every job.

Diameter, Surface Finish, Straightness and Roundness

Reliable grinding quotes need more than a nominal diameter. We review the incoming OD, amount of stock removal, finished upper and lower diameter limits, surface finish, and inspection method. Straightness and roundness are independent characteristics; a bar can meet diameter tolerance yet still need straightening or additional process adjustments.

  • Diameter: starting range, required finished OD, tolerance and full-length or localized measurement points.
  • Surface finish: specify Ra or RMS if required and whether polishing follows grinding.
  • Straightness: state the permitted deviation or TIR and the inspection support span.
  • Material condition: annealed, cold-drawn, hardened or aged as specified; include heat/lot paperwork.
  • Production: pieces, length, number of releases, completion date and protective packaging.

Fine tolerances and smooth surfaces may be achievable in suitable setups. The achievable result depends on wheel selection, material, bar rigidity, straightness and the requested diameter change; we confirm the process when reviewing your specifications rather than promising one tolerance for all parts.

Grinding Plus Straightening, Polishing and Cutting

As needed, Mozaic offers two-roll and press straightening, metal bar polishing, saw cutting, chamfering and protective shipping packages. We are ISO 9001:2015 certified and can review required inspection records and mill certifications by purchase order.

Our Centerless Grinding Equipment and Shop Process

Our Schaumburg shop uses Cincinnati centerless grinding equipment, including 2OM and Twin Grip machines, for qualifying round bar and cylindrical work. Grinding-wheel selection, work-rest height, regulating-wheel setup and bar support are matched to the job’s material, incoming condition and required finish. These are practical manufacturing considerations—not guarantees that every material or geometry will grind on every machine.

Long-Bar Grinding and Inspection Planning

Long bars need adequate support during grinding, handling, measurement and shipment. When specifying straightness, provide the support span, method and allowable deviation or total indicator reading (TIR). A diameter measurement alone cannot establish whether an unsupported 12-foot bar is straight enough for your application.

Typical Work We Quote

  • Customer-supplied stainless or alloy steel bars requiring controlled outside diameter before CNC or Swiss machining
  • Full-length bars requiring additional straightening and/or polishing after grinding
  • Selected short cylindrical parts or stepped parts requiring an in-feed feasibility review
  • Recurring releases where material, inspection and packaging requirements should be agreed before production

Mozaic Precision Metals offers thru-feed and in-feed centerless grinding for round bars and cylindrical components.

Thru-feed grinding feeds the workpiece continuously between the grinding and regulating wheels. It is well suited to straight bars and parts with a consistent outside diameter.

In-feed grinding processes a workpiece at a fixed position and is suitable for certain components with shoulders or features that prevent continuous feeding.

Our bar-processing capabilities cover outside diameters from 0.060″ to 8.000″ and bar lengths from 3′ to 24′. Available sizes, tolerances, and finishes depend on the material and job requirements. Send us your specifications so we can confirm the appropriate process.

Diameter Control, Surface Finish, and Additional Services

Centerless grinding removes material from the outside diameter to achieve the specified size and improve surface finish. A support blade holds the workpiece between a grinding wheel, which removes material, and a regulating wheel, which controls workpiece rotation.

We review diameter tolerance, roundness, straightness, and surface finish requirements when quoting your job. Additional services include bar straightening, polishing, chamfering, and packaging to prepare material for machining or shipment.
