Understanding 17-4 PH Heat Treatment & Precision Bar Supply
17-4 PH (Type 630 / UNS S17400) is a precipitation-hardening stainless steel. Its properties depend on the specified solution-treated or aged condition, which affects strength, hardness and ductility. Condition A and the H-series conditions are not interchangeable: an RFQ should identify the actual delivered heat-treatment condition and the governing ASTM or AMS specification.
Common conditions include H900, H925, H1025, H1075, H1100 and H1150. Specialty H1150-M and H1150-D conditions have different thermal sequences and should only be specified using the exact governing revision. Typical aging schedules are reference information; engineering drawings, material certificates and approved specifications control acceptance.
For precision-ground bar buyers: Heat treatment defines material properties, while centerless grinding and finishing define the ordered dimensional requirements. Include finished outside diameter and numerical limits, straightness requirements, microfinish, length, quantity, material condition and certifications. If any heat treatment occurs after final grinding, dimensional stability must be evaluated as part of the manufacturing plan.
Mozaic Precision Metals provides centerless grinding, straightening, polishing, cutting, chamfering and bar supply or sourcing review. Processing suitability is confirmed by condition, bar size and drawing requirements. Submit your specification and quantity using Check Availability to have our team review sourcing and lead time.
Quick Condition Comparison
| Condition | Typical aging approach | Purchasing consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Condition A | Solution treated | Starting condition for aging and further machining |
| H900 | 900°F / 1 hour, air cool | Higher strength and hardness |
| H925 | 925°F / 4 hours, air cool | High-strength aged condition |
| H1025 | 1025°F / 4 hours, air cool | Strength and toughness balance |
| H1075 | 1075°F / 4 hours, air cool | Intermediate aging condition |
| H1100 | 1100°F / 4 hours, air cool | Ductility and machining |
| H1150 | 1150°F / 4 hours, air cool | Toughness and ductility |
| H1150-M | 1400°F / 2 hours, then 1150°F / 4 hours | Modified two-stage treatment |
| H1150-D | Double-aged; confirm specified treatment | Specialty double-aged condition |
