TG&P and centerless ground bar are not necessarily competing products. TG&P describes a processing sequence—turning, grinding, and polishing—while centerless grinding describes a method used to finish the outside diameter.
A TG&P bar can be centerless ground. The useful comparison is therefore the starting material, completed processing, and finished specifications—not an assumed difference in quality.
What Does Each Term Tell You?

Neither label establishes a universal diameter tolerance or surface roughness.
Can TG&P Bar Need Additional Grinding?
Yes. A supplied TG&P bar may need further grinding if its diameter or finish does not meet the final drawing requirements.
For example, a nominal 1-inch TG&P bar is not automatically suitable for a component requiring a finished diameter of 0.9995–1.0000 inches. Its actual supplied limits must be compared with the drawing.
Additional grinding requires sufficient stock allowance. It cannot restore material to a bar that is already below the minimum finished diameter.
Does Centerless Grinding Guarantee Better Straightness?
The words “centerless ground” do not establish a straightness limit. Incoming bar condition, preparation, machine setup, and inspection requirements all matter.
Specify diameter tolerance, roundness, straightness, and surface finish separately. For straightness inspection, include the measurement method, support spacing where applicable, and acceptance limit.
